Eight-year-old Nihaal Cheema bagged laurels for the country by winning the 18th FCG International Championship at California, USA. He shot scores of -4 in two rounds of 18 holes to clinch the title. Noah Bloomfield of USA stood second with a score of -2 and Roy Moon stood third with a score of even par. Cheema had won the same event last year too. He would play four more major junior championships in the US this summer. Cheema is a student of Vivek High School, Sector 38, and practices golf at the Chandigarh Golf Club and the CGA.
Sports trials from today
The Punjab Sports Department will organise selection trials to pick players on 636 sports wing seats for affiliated colleges of Panjab University. The trials will be held on July 8 and 9 for various disciplines, including, athletics, badminton, hockey, kabaddi (national style), kho kho, swimming, volleyball, weightlifting, archery, judo, cycling, boxing, football, shooting and wrestling. The trials will be held at Guru Nanak Stadium, Ludhiana (7.30am).
Athletics championship to begin on Aug 7
The Chandigarh Sub-Junior, Junior and Senior State Athletics Championship will be held at the Sector 7 Sports Complex from August 7 to 10. Athletes residing, studying or working in Chandigarh will be eligible to participate in the championship. The interested can submit their entries before August 2.
