80 vendors get lucky in draw of lots at Panchkula

The Panchkula Municipal Corporation today held a draw of lots for street vending sites in Sector 19 for registered vendors to start their business under the Street Vending Act, 2014.

The MC conducted the draw of lots for 80 vendors whose documents were found in order by the corporation during a verification drive. There are 458 sites, which are to be allocated to the registered vendors.

The MC had floated tenders for sites in Sector 2 and 15 also so that these could be allocated.

Sumedha Kataria, MC Commissioner-cum-Administrator, said the corporation had started the verification of documents of all vendors so that the allocation process could be speeded up. Five teams were constituted by the Commissioner to verify vendor data, prepared by a private company last year after flaws were found by the authorities, she said.

Kataria said the teams were constituted after a lukewarm response to the first draw about 10 days ago in which only 60 vendors had turned up instead of 162 who were called for the verification of data.

She said the draw was postponed after the staff found flaws in the data.

The Commissioner said unsatisfied with the survey, the five teams were directed to visit each house at the mentioned address and verify whether the person was staying there or not. This would be completed by next week following which a report would be submitted to her.

All those vendors whose documents were verified will get a site when draw of lots are conducted in the future.

The Haryana Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran had allotted land for the vending sites in Sector 2, 4, 10, 11, 12, 15 and 19. The vendors will be allotted sites at these places soon. — TNS
