Three city students topped the tricity by securing 99.8 per cent in the CBSE Class XII examination, results of which were announced today.

The CBSE has discontinued the practice of announcing national toppers to avoid “unhealthy competition” among students. No merit lists were announced in 2020 and 2021 as the results were declared on the basis of alternate assessment scheme because exams could not be conducted due to the Covid-19 pandemic. As per the past practice, the results of the tricity have been compiled after being shared by schools at their own level. Divyam Goel (non-medical stream), and Vrinda Gupta and Himanshi Garg (both commerce) shared the top rank. Goel from Guru Nanak Public School, Chandigarh, a resident of Sector 76, Mohali, says he hated studying, but divided time properly to cover the entire syllabus.

Goel said he kept pace with the JEE preparation as well and revised notes regularly. “Thorough understanding of the NCERT material is quite important for CBSE exams and conceptual clarity,” he said.

“All that matters is how much you have gained and learned, not scored. I used to have discussions with friends and share ideas,” said Goel, adding he didn’t study for more than four hours. He wants to pursue computer engineering.

For Vrinda Gupta of Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 27, consistency and not leaving backlog helped her achieve success. She was involved in extracurricular activities and headed a student’s joint stock company at her school. She was also the head of the school editorial board. She would set weekly targets and focus on achieving those.

“A lot of students were banking on reference material but did not study the NCERT material thoroughly. I swear by NCERT reading and CBSE material available online for practice,” said Gupta.

Panchkula resident Himanshi Garg, also of Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 27, said her strategy was not to study for four-five hours in one go. Rather, she set small targets and achieved those one by one.

Garg said she didn’t have hard time coping with stress. Cycling through suburbs of Panchkula as a frequent activity helped her manage stress.

Talking about her future ambitions, Garg said she would explore the diverse range of choices available. For the time being, she wants to take admission in a good college and obtain a deserving placement.

From the medical stream, Mahika Aggarwal topped the tricity, securing 99.4%. A student of Sri Guru Gobind School, Sector 26, she said a thorough revision of the syllabus was important while preparing for exams. “Don’t burn out and enjoy the process” is her success mantra. Aggarwal said she followed the NCERT syllabus and studied previous years’ question papers.

In the humanities stream, Mannat Sharma, Abia Siddiqui and Ayushi Gupta topped with 99.2%.

Sharma of Bhavan Vidyalaya scored a perfect hundred in sociology. Talking about her exam preparation, she said she got a head start as she started early.

Siddiqui from Satluj Public School, Panchkula, said she had focused on time management. Thorough revision helped her along with organisation of study material. She didn’t adhere to any particular time limit and rather focused on one or two chapters at a time.

Gupta from Delhi Public School, Sector 40, shared she seldom ventured out and avoided parties. She studied in early morning hours and took breaks only for eating and other activities. “When it’s time to study, just study,” said Gupta.
