Amid reports of increasing Covid-19 cases on campus, Panjab University has finally decided to close AC Joshi Library.

The PU authorities said the step had been taken in pursuance to the UT order issued under the Disaster Management Act, 2005.

As per the UT Administration order, all facilities/services at Panjab University, including AC Joshi Library, departmental libraries, laboratories, swimming pool, play grounds, etc., will remain closed till May 31.

Online teaching will continue with staggered presence of staff as already notified by the university, informed a PU spokesperson.

Earlier today, Panjab University convened a meeting under the chairmanship of Prof VR Sinha, Dean, University Instructions, to review the situation.

Officiating Registrar Vikram Nayyar, Controller of Examination Jagat Bushan, Dean Student Welfare (men) SK Tomar, Dean Student Welfare (women) Sukhbir Kaur, Chief Medical Officer Dr Rupinder Kaur, Dean College Development Council Sanjay Kaushik, Secretary to Vice-Chancellor Devinder Singh, and Prof Naval Kishore from the Department of Geology also participated in the meeting.

Hostellers urged to leave

The PU authorities, meanwhile, urged the hostellers to return to their homes.

“In the interest of health and safety of students and also to ensure that the PU hostel residents are not exposed to the highly infectious virus in the prevailing alarming conditions of pandemic, the committee has decided that all the students shall be requested to return safely to their homes and families,” said the spokesperson.

“The authorities will seek assistance of the UT Administration for the safe departure of students,” the spokesperson added.

‘Online teaching to continue’

Online teaching will continue with staggered presence of staff as already notified by the university, informed a Panjab University spokesperson.
