Accident victim’s kin awarded Rs 20.57L

The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal here has directed the rider and owner of a motorcycle to pay Rs 20.57 lakh in compensation to Sandhya Devi, a resident of Dhanas, Chandigarh, whose husband died in an accident five years ago.

Sandhya Devi had stated that on September 9, 2020, her husband, Ram Singh, was going somewhere on his bicycle. As he reached near the Dadu Majra bridge, a motorcycle hit his bicycle from behind and he fell down. Ram Singh died at the PGI.

Advocate DS Jandiala, appearing on behalf of the claimants, said the deceased was 33 years old. He was working as mason (tile work) and earning Rs 25,000 per month.

The victim’s widow and minor son had sought Rs 50-lakh compensation along with interest at the rate of 12% per annum from the date of filing of the petition till the realisation of the amount.

The rider and owner of the motorcycle claimed a false FIR had been registered against him.

After hearing of the arguments, the tribunal said since the vehicle was not insured, the respondents rider and owner of the vehicle are liable to pay Rs 20,57,856 in compensation with interest at the rate of 7.5% per annum.
