Prof Surinder Kumar Mehta, Department of Chemistry, and Associate Professor Harinder Pal Kang UCIM, Panjab University, have developed an affordable antimicrobial copper-based nano-coating for masks and PPE kits to help fight Covid-19 pandemic.

Such coating kills microbes like the novel coronavirus on the outer surfaces of masks. The project has also been submitted to DST, Ministry of Technology for extensive research. “Nano-Copper ensures limited penetration and accumulation of microbial contaminants on coated surfaces. The coating also has the potential to reduce the risk of secondary infection by limiting the transmission of the microbes,” said Mehta. “Unlike common disinfecting methods such as diluted bleach and alcohol, this innovative antiviral nano-coating is boosted by heat-sensitive polymers that encapsulate and inactive the viruses. It is non-toxic and environment friendly. This spray coating can protect surfaces from Corona virus for up to 45 days by making it inactive.”

“Following performance and clinical tests, the coating will be made available for commercial purchase in times to come. The technology has been developed with the support of a Chandigarh-based Private Technology-Research company, Ceyone Consultants LLP,” said Kang.
