At Mohali, firecrackers were exploded and sweets were distributed as Amanjot, who was part of the winning team, is also from the city.

The historic victory is even sweeter as allrounder Amanjot Kaur, 25, a resident of Phase-V, Mohali, had struck the winning runs with a boundary against Australia in the semifinal match.

In the final, the allrounder scored 12 runs in 14 balls and bowled four overs for 34 runs. She took the important catch of Laura Wolvaardt.

Amanjot’s father Bhupinder Singh, who runs a carpenter shop, said, “It is a proud moment for all of India as the team has won the World Cup after heartbreaks in 2005 and 2017. Amanjot’s hardwork has been rewarded and God has been very kind to us.”

Singh held India’s flag in his hand throughout the match and waved it vigorously as the Indian team hit took wickets one after another.

Amanjot’s mother Ranjeet Kaur, relatives, friends and sisters had gathered at her house since afternoon and waiting for the winning moment.

The Mohali cricketer, who had studied at a local college, plays for the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA). She had captained the Chandigarh senior women’s team for three consecutive years, before moving to the PCA.

What a day for Indian sport!

“Heartfelt congratulations to our women’s cricket team, now world champions. You have shown us all what quiet confidence, togetherness and hard work can achieve. Watching you play was pure joy and a reminder that sport at its best is about courage and belief. So proud,” said Abhinav Bindra.
