Chandigarh, August 2
Residents of Mani Majra will start getting water supply 24x7 from August 4, the day when Home Minister Amit Shah will inaugurate the Rs 162 crore project at Shivalik Garden.
During his visit to the city, the Home Minister will also review the implementation of new criminal laws.
An official of Chandigarh Smart City Limited said the project was complete. Only road recarpeting in those areas where the pipelines for the project were laid is underway, he added.
“Though the round-the-clock water supply will begin from the day of inauguration of the project, further streamlining will take four-six months,” said the official.
Staff of Smart City Limited as well as the Municipal Corporation were seen making preparations at the venue in Shivalik Garden, Mani Majra. The staff concerned will be on their toes even on off days, i.e. Saturday and Sunday.
Under this Smart City project, a total of 21 km supply line has been laid. Two underground water reservoirs (UGRs) have been built. Each reservoir will have a capacity of 2 million gallons per day (MGD).
Besides, 12,700 ordinary water meters have been replaced with ultrasonic smart ones.
The project is being spearheaded by the Municipal Corporation with financial contribution from the Smart City Mission.
For the Rs 510-crore pan-city water project, Rs 412 crore is a soft loan from a French financial institution, Agence Française de Développement’s, and Rs 98 crore grant from the European Union. The loan will be paid by way of an increase in the monthly water bills. Officials claim the two projects will end the problem of water contamination and reduce wastage from the current 35% to 15%.
1L residents to benefit
The project will benefit a population of 1,09,000 for now. Modern Housing Complex (MHC), Shivalik Enclave, Indira Colony, Shastri Nagar and Old Mani Majra have been covered under the pilot project.
