A 41-year-old Army jawan reportedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service rifle at Behlana here last night.

The victim has been identified as Sepoy Manoj Kujur, a native of Jharkhand.

The police said the victim was on guard duty when he shot himself with an INSAS rifle. His colleagues rushed to the spot on hearing the gunshot. The victim was taken to the Command Hospital, Chandimandir, where doctors declared him brought dead.

The UT police were informed about the incident in the morning. Meanwhile, his samples for Covid test were taken. The autopsy will be conducted at the GMCH-32 after the Covid test report. The police have initiated an investigation. “The motive behind the extreme step is yet to be established,” said a police official.
