Arunachal MLA gets 2-year jail in cheque-bounce case
A local court today sentenced Tara Techi, Julli Techi, Raitu Techi and PK Roy to imprisonment of two years in two cases of dishonoring of bank cheques. The court ordered M/S TK Engineering and Construction Private Limited, Tara Techi, Julli Techi, Raitu Techi and PK Roy to also pay a compensation of Rs 5.5 crore jointly within one month to the complainant for harassment suffered in the cheque bounce cases.
The complainant, Kulwinder Singh Grewal, designated partner of GTC-M-Tradez LLP, Chandigarh Road, Morinda, a vendor management organisation, had signed an MOU with the accused on March 8, 2018, whereby the complainant agreed to supply cement, butumen, steel and construction material to the accused.
“For more than one year, the accused did not adhere to the payment schedule and the cheques issued in favour of the complainant were dishonoured. Accused Raitu Techi, a native of Arunachal Pradesh, a serving MLA, requested for replacement of cheques on one pretext or the other and later requested for recasting of MOU,” said advocate Tejwinder Singh Gill.
The defence counsel argued that the convicts are senior citizens and first time-offenders while the counsel for complainant argued for maximum punishment.
The court took cognizance of the fact that the convicts had shown utter disregard to the law of land and a lenient view for such unwarranted acts would further promote lawlessness in the society.
