The CBI today laid a trap at the Sector 26 police station after a graft complaint but the prime accused, ASI Vijender Singh, escaped and was later found dead in his car. It is suspected that he died by suicide.

The CBI had received a complaint that Vijender was demanding a bribe to favour an accused in an attempt-to-murder case registered in March at the police station.

According to sources, the accused’s sister had approached the CBI, alleging that Vijender was demanding Rs 40,000 to favour her brother in the case. Her brother and another person were booked for stabbing a person at the Grain Market, Sector 26. After negotiations, the bribe amount was reduced to Rs 20,000, she said.

Today, the complainant visited the Sector 26 police station to deliver money. Sources reported that Vijender allegedly asked her to place the money in a file and he left the room immediately. Before leaving, Vijender instructed ASI Satish to keep the file.

The CBI officers detained Satish. A search was conducted at the house of the accused.

In the evening, the other ASI died allegedly after consuming some poisonous substance. He was found lying unconscious in his car parked near the road separating Sectors 40 and 41.

The police were informed and he was rushed to the Government Multi-Speciality Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, where he was declared dead on arrival.

In the evening, Satish was let off but asked to join investigation whenever required.
