The findings of the post-mortem examination of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who allegedly shot himself dead at his residence here on October 7, are consistent with the circumstances indicated in the preliminary inquest and the officer’s final note, said sources.

The autopsy was conducted at the PGIMER on Wednesday under the supervision of a medical board. The entire process was videographed to ensure transparency.

Sources said observations in the report matched the conclusions drawn in the initial police probe, lending support to the sequence of events outlined in the late officer’s final communication through a letter found beside him. The detailed report will be handed over to the special investigation team (SIT) for inclusion in the ongoing probe.

The post-mortem took place a day after the UT police informed that it had been compelled to approach the court to direct the family to come forward for identification of the body. The police had stressed that conducting the post-mortem without delay was crucial to preserve vital forensic evidence and to ensure the integrity of the investigation.

The police had found a ‘final note’ after the officer committed suicide on October 7. The eight-page long suicide note had specifically mentioned senior IPS and IAS officers, including Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Kapur and then Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya, blaming them for taking the extreme step. Following this, Kumar’s wife Amneet P Kumar filed a complaint and demanded that both officers be named in the FIR and arrested for allegedly abetting Puran Kumar’s suicide and under the SC/ST Act. According to Amneet, the FIR filed on October 6 against Y Puran Kumar’s gunman Sushil Kumar was an immediate trigger for her husband’s suicide.

Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya was sent on leave. Later, DGP Shatrujeet Kapur was also sent on indefinite leave, appointing OP Singh as the new DGP. Adding to the controversy, ASI Sandeep Lathar, who had arrested Puran Kumar’s aide Sushil Kumar on October 6, reportedly died by suicide on Tuesday evening. He left behind a note levelling corruption charges against Y Puran Kumar, who had previously served in Rohtak.
