Balance sports, studies: Gupreet Singh Sandhu to budding football players
Chandigarh, July 5
On a personal visit to his hometown, the Indian team football skipper Gupreet Singh Sandhu visited his St Stephen’s Football Academy yesterday. Sandhu, who had also trained at the academy, interacted with young players of the academy and inspired them to work hard.
He also met John Xavier, Vice-Principal; and Surinder Singh, Head Coach. During his visit, Sandhu express his gratitude to his former coaches Surinder Singh and Amanpreet Singh for their guidance and support during his formative years. He also expressed his special gratitude to Harold Carver, Director, St Stephen’s School, and other coaches Bhupinder Singh, Bhupinder Singh Pinka and Sandeep Singh.
“They all have played a great role in my life. I am on a short visit to my hometown. It was unplanned, but I always feel happy to return to the same ground and interact with some familiar faces,” said Sandhu.
While interacting with the trainees, Sandhu shared some tips. “Skill and technique is very important for a player these days. Gone are the days when players used to play at a particular position. I hope the youngsters would come to know the importance of dreaming big and balancing sports and education for a better future,” he added.
Last month, after the iconic footballer Sunil Chhetri announced his retirement, Sandhu was appointed regular captain of the Indian team. During his initial days, he represented the same school in many competitions.
