A local court has acquitted a resident of Bathinda in a drug case as the prosecution failed to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

Suraj Ali (35) was arrested for allegedly carrying 260 grams of opium in 2017.

According to the prosecution, 260 grams of opium was recovered from Ali during a checking near the Industrial Area, Phase I, Chandigarh, on July 28, 2017. Accordingly, a case under the NDPS Act was registered against Ali.

During trial, defence counsel Ashish Kumar argued that he was falsely implicated in the case. It was also contested that three police officials stated to be in a police team at the time of arrest of Suraj were not on duty on that day as per the duty roaster. After hearing the arguments, the court acquitted the suspect of the charges.
