The whole city was awash in religious fervour today on account of the consecration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. Chandigarh was a kaleidoscope, with markets, roads, temples and roundabouts decked up with sparkling lights to mark Lord Rama’s homecoming.

LED screens were installed at temples and marketplaces for the broadcast of the historic consecration ceremony in Ayodhya. ‘Jai Shri Ram’ flags fluttered at every nook and corner of the city. Devotees offered ladoos to passersby and performed bhajans. Residents burnt crackers in the evening. Some lit up diyas and drew rangolis, invoking the festive spirit of Diwali.

Several religious, social, market and resident welfare associations organised special events to mark the historic occasion. The ruling BJP also held several programmes to mark the day and distributed ladoos. The city Congress also organised a ladoo-distribution ceremony at its office in Sector 35. The Sai Mandir was illuminated with 21,000 diyas.

The chants of ‘Jai Shri Ram’ reverberated across the city. Chandigarh Mayor Anup Gupta, BJP chief Jitender Malhotra, senior leader Ramvir Bhatti and Pradeep Bansal of the Shri Ram Kripa Trust, among others, celebrated the occasion with much fervour, lighting lamps and performing Diwali rituals. “This is a historic day, and we are lucky to be a part of it,” said Mayor Gupta.

Members of the Chandigarh Beopar Mandal (CBM) attended various pran pratishtha programmes organised in Sectors 29, 30, 46, 45, 44, 22 and 26.

“All team members were honoured by market associations in different sectors. More than 30 to 35 associations have arranged such programmes to express their joy over the inauguration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya,” shared CBM president Charanjiv Singh.

Former Chandigarh MP Satya Pal Jain expressed, “I consider myself fortunate because I got the opportunity to attend the kar sewas in 1989 and 1992 for the construction of the Ram Temple and to represent the BJP as a lawyer in the Ayodhya Inquiry Commission for 14 years.”

Former Union Minister Pawan Bansal said, “Best wishes to the entire world for the consecration of the Ram Mandir. I follow the ideals of Lord Ram. I will definitely visit the Ayodhya Ram Temple.”

Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Banwarilal Purohit watched the live telecast of the consecration ceremony at Ayodhya’s Ram Temple at the Raj Bhavan, which was adorned with flowers and colourful lights.

The Governor expressed gratitude to PM Narendra Modi, who led the consecration of the temple, and said, “As a Ram devotee, I had been waiting for this divine occasion for a long time. We are all fortunate that we got to witness this historic moment.”

Former city BJP president Sanjay Tandon also took part in 15 different events. He stressed the significance of the day, saying, “It is no less than a festival.” Another ex-city BJP chief, Arun Sood, organised a special event at his residence in Sector 38, in which crackers were burnt. He said, “Thanks to the Modi-led BJP, the Ram Temple has turned into a reality.

The celebrations ended on a musical note at several marketplaces and temples, with ‘Musical Evening’ events. Revellers stood in serpentine queues outside pandals for langar and snacks.

Ram Temple replica installed in Mayor’s office

A replica of the Ram Temple and an idol of the deity were installed at Mayor Anup Gupta’s office today during a religious ceremony, which was attended by the BJP’s Jatinder Pal Malhotra and other party councillors.

Mayor Gupta expressed, “The whole country is awash in religious fervour over the consecration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. To celebrate the same, we have placed a replica of the temple and an idol in the Mayor’s office. It will inspire all Mayors to work as Lord Ram did to have Ram Rajya, which symbolises able administration and equality for all.” He added, “The replica is also indicative of a historic moment being witnessed after 500 years.”
