Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda emphasised the Congress’ commitment to creating new opportunities for women in Haryana, stating that the progress of a society is measured by the progress of its women.
Speaking at a women’s conference organised in Panchkula under the Haryana Maange Hisaab Abhiyan, Hooda highlighted the pro-women welfare measures initiated by the previous Congress government in Haryana.
Hooda recalled the first women’s medical college in post-Independence India, Bhagat Phool Singh Women’s College in Khanpur, which was established during Congress tenure. Additionally, the Congress government introduced the Ladli Social Pension Scheme, providing financial support to parents with only daughters, a scheme that was discontinued by the BJP after coming to power.
He also mentioned that the Congress government used to honour women with Rs 1.50 lakh in the name of Indira Gandhi, Kalpana Chawla, and Haryana’s first woman president Shanno Devi, a practice that was halted by the BJP.
He also promised that when Congress returns to power in Haryana, women and daughters would be given full respect and recognition, including the reinstatement of 33 per cent reservation for women in all educational institutions of the state.
Haryana Congress president Choudhary Udaibhan reiterated the party’s commitment to advancing women’s rights, including a promise to provide 30 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha elections. He criticised the BJP for ignoring the demand for the Women’s Reservation Bill, as advocated by Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge during the monsoon session, accusing the BJP of having an anti-women stance.
