A bike-borne man was killed after a speeding car hit him near TDI City on Airport Road today. The car driver sustained major injuries.
The victim has been identifed as Baljeet Singh (45), a resident of Rampur Kaleran village in Fatehgarh Sahib district. Baljeet was working at the GMCH in Sector 32, Chandigarh. He used to commute from his village to Chandigarh everyday.
The incident occurred around noon when Baljeet was going on his bike towards the Kharar side on Airport Road after finishing his duty. In the meantime, a speeding Cruze car jumped over the divider to the other side of the road and hit his bike after the car driver lost control over the vehicle. The car also hit a truck passing through the road. The car and the bike were badly damaged. According to the police, the speeding car was coming from Sunny Enclave and going towards Mohali. Baljeet Singh died on the spot, while the car driver, Gagan, was seriously injured. Gagan, a resident of Kharar, was taken to the Civil Hospital at Phase 6 from where he was taken to the GMCH, Sector 32, Chandigarh, where he is under treatment.
The truck driver, Purshottam, informed the police about the incident. He said he was going to Tarn Taran for duty. He said the motorcyclist was going in front of his truck when the speeding car hit him before hitting the truck. He said the car driver survived as the air bags were deployed.
A passerby said the car was trying to overtake a vehicle when the mishap occurred. A case has been registered against the car driver under Sections 279, 304-A and 427 of the IPC at the Balongi police station.
SI Harpreet, investigating officer, said, “Both vehicles were impounded. The car driver will be arrested after his treatment is over.”
