BMW murder case: Proceedings for accused’s extradition underway, court told

The Chandigarh Police have told the court that proceedings have been started for the extradition of Balraj Singh Randhawa, an accused in the alleged murder of Akansh Sen, nephew of former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh.

Sen was allegedly run over by a BMW car in Chandigarh’s Sector 9 on the night of February 9, 2017.

Randhawa was allegedly driving the car. Another accused Hermehtab Singh has already been convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in 2019 in the case, while Randhawa managed to flee the country. This information has been given by the Chandigarh Police in a status report submitted before the court .

The police said during the course of the investigation, it had been found that accused had not travelled on his passport issued to him prior to the incident. The location of the accused could only be found with sincere efforts of the staff of Crime Branch with their specialised skills and experience.Thereafter, the matter was taken up with Interpol and the location of the accused was confirmed in Canada.

A proposal has already been prepared for extradition of Balraj Singh Randhawa and the administrative queries are been rectified without any delay.

The police further said the property of Balraj Singh Randhawa had already been attached.

At present, the file is pending with Ministry of External Affairs and is in process. The Ministry of External Affairs has intimated that extradition request in respect of Balraj Singh Randhawa from Canada to India has been forwarded to High Commission of India, Ottawa, on October 30, 2024.
