Paras Hospital, Panchkula, will be the first private sector hospital in the tricity region to start allogeneic as well as autologous bone marrow transplant (BMT), said hospital director and HOD, Haematology, Dr (Brig) Ajay Sharma.

“The centre will be conducting unrelated and haploidentical BMTs. The latter is needed when a matched donor is not available in the family,” he said.

Dr Sharma said: “After the US and China, India has the thrid highest number of haematological cancer patients in the world. Though the success rate for BMTs in India is on a par with international benchmarks, this complex procedure is performed in a few hospitals in India.” — TNS
