High drama was witnessed when an accused in an Excise case escaped from the premises of the Dera Bassi Civil Hospital where he was brought for medical examination on Thursday evening. However, the accused was chased by police officials, who managed to nab him. A police constable was also injured in the incident.

The accused, identified as Ajay Kumar, a resident of Paragpur village, was taken to the Civil Hospital by a constable Malkit Singh. After the medical examination, the accused was coming out from the hospital, when he pushed the cop. As the latter tried to catch him, the accused ran towards the road. He was caught with the help of passersby in a narrow lane of the market.

Ajay was nabbed by the Mubarikpur police with 30 cartons of illicit liquor at a naka near Dera Bassi on Tuesday. A case was registered in this regard at the Mubarikpur police post.

The police produced Ajay before the local court on Thursday after his earlier remand came to an end. The accused leveled allegations of inhuman treatment against the police in the court. However, the police refuted the allegations. Later, the court sent the accused to judicial custody.

The police said a fresh case was registered against the accused under relevant sections of the IPC at the Mubarikpur police post.
