Brace for 5‑day rain spell in Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana from Friday

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday issued an alert and warning while predicting heavy to very rainfall activity in Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana from Friday to Tuesday.

The weathermen have issued an orange alert for very heavy downpour in the region on Saturday while a yellow alert has been issued for heavy rain on Friday and Sunday to next Tuesday.

“There will be an increase in rainfall activity over Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana from the night of August 22 to 25,” the IMD predicted.

Issuing the weather forecast and warning, the weather department said light to moderate rain is likely at a few places during the next 24 hours. “Thereafter, the rainfall activity is very likely to increase over Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana from the night of August 22,” it said.

The IMD predicted light to moderate rain at many places on August 22, at most places from August 23 to 25 and at few places thereafter in Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana.

“Heavy rainfall (7cm or more) is very likely from August 22 to 25 at isolated places over Punjab and Haryana and from 23 to 25 over Chandigarh,” the weathermen said, while forecasting very heavy rain (12 cm or more) at isolated places on August 23 over Punjab and Haryana.

According to the weather forecast for the next seven days, the region is likely to witness fairly widespread rainfall at many places on Friday; widespread at most places from Saturday to Tuesday; and scattered rainfall at few places on Wednesday next.

Mohali recorded the highest maximum temperature of 35.4°C in Punjab while Panchkula logged the lowest minimum temperature of 24.5°C in Haryana today.

Chandigarh measured 35.3 and 24.7°C maximum and minimum temperature, which was 1.9 and 2.5 degrees above yesterday’s and the normal reading, respectively, while night temperature was 0.5 and 0.8 degree less than previous nights’ and normal average, respectively.

While Mohali recorded 25.9°C night temperature, Panchkula’s day temperature remained 34.3°C.

The IMD recorded 1 mm rainfall in Mohali and 0.4 mm in Chandigarh during the last 24 hours.
