BBMB holds tree plantation drive
The Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) organised a tree plantation drive as part of its annual Swachhata Pakhwada at residential colonies located in Sector 35 and 36. BBMB Chairman Manoj Tripathi planted saplings along with the children of the colony. He spoke about the crucial role trees play in maintaining ecological balance.
Workshops at Kalagram in June
The North Zone Cultural Centre (NZCC), Union Ministry of Culture, will organise annual summer workshops for children to promote theatre, folk arts, clay modelling, papier-mâché, and folk dance at Kalagram, Manimajra, next month. Yashwinder Sharma, programme officer, NZCC, stated that applications could be submitted at Kalagram with a nominal registration fee of Rs 50 per participant till May 31. Theatre workshop will be held from June 1 to 30, clay modelling and papier-mâché from June 1 to 15, and folk dance of Punjab from June 1 to 20.
Camp at golf club from May 26
Chandigarh Golf Range will conduct a summer junior camp from May 26 to June 5. Trainees will learn the basics of the game with new golf aids. The camp, which will be conducted by Mahesh Kumar, Class A teaching professional, will be held from 7.30 am to 8.30 am every day. He will be assisted Sarvar Hussain and Rajinder Kumar.
Shuttler Geeta wins bronze
Local player Geeta Mahajan won bronze medal in the European Senior Masters Badminton Tournament held at Vienna. She claimed the third position in the women’s 45+ event. Players from 18 countries participated in the meet.
Little Champs Cricket League
St Joseph’s Academy beat Chandigarh Cricket Nursery by six wickets in the Little Champs Cricket League. The nursery team posted 135 in 24.2 overs with the help of Raghav Machhal (26), Parv Verma (16), Avyaan Agnihotri (12) and Shourya Gadhwal (12). Mantejveer Saini and Niyati Mahajan claimed three wickets each, while Manik Verma took two. In reply, St Joseph’s side posted 136/4 in 18.5 overs with the help of Mywish Sandhu (50), Aditya Nayyer (38), Divij Jain (37) and Mantejveer Saini (14).
Chess tourney from May 24
The Chandigarh Chess Association will organise Under-17 Open and Girls Chess Championship on May 24 and 25 at Sri Aurobindo School of Integral Education, Sector 27. Two boys and two girls will be selected to represent Chandigarh at the national under-17 in Bihar from October 5 to 13. Players can submit their entries before May 22.
Gold for Veteran athlete Sandhu
Rattan Singh Sandhu from the city won gold medal in the hammer throw event of the recently concluded 44th National Veteran Athletics Championship in Mysuru (Karnataka). Sandhu claimed the top position with a throw of 20.49m in the 80+ years category. He claimed the second position with a throw of 8.62m in the shot-put event and claimed another silver medal in the 100m event (80+) by clocking 17.19seconds. Earlier also, he won many medals in various national and international tournaments.
