Panchkula, March 12

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, Panchkula, disposed of a consumer complaint against BYJU’S Learning App after the latter paid a refund of Rs 88,500 and Rs 51,000 as compensation to complainant, Mannasvi Jain, a resident of Sector 6.

Pankaj Chandgothia, counsel for the complainant, told Chandigarh Tribune that an employee of BYJU’S (Think and Learn Pvt Ltd) had approached her client’s parents.

After visiting their house, BYJU’S representative, Dhruv Sharma, told her parents that he could suggest the best field of education, followed by an aptitude test, while demonstrating the study package.

By conducting an oral test, Sharma suggested Mannasvi’s parents that medical stream was best suited for her and she should go for the package designed by them for Class X to Class XII students.

Following this, Mannasvi’s father, Manish Jain, told Sharma that he would get back to him in a few days. Later, Sharma offered them a discount of Rs 12,500 on total package of Rs 1 lakh. He assured Mannasvi’s parents if they don’t like the learning package after using it, their money will be refunded.

Taken in by words of Sharma and endorsement by Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, Manish paid Rs 88,500 through his credit card on September 1.

After 10 days, they received the learning kit and within a couple of days, Mannasvi felt that she is not inclined towards medical stream. Sharma was subsequently approached for the refund on September 15, but he started to avoid parents of the complainant.

Even a refund request was made to the company on September 20, within the stipulated time of 15 days.

Chandgothia sent BYJU’s a notice asking it to refund Rs 88,500 paid by his client by October 24.

As BYJU’S failed to refund the amount within stipulated period, a notice was issued to the firm and Shah Rukh Khan for December 30, said Chandgothia.
