Carmel Convent mishap: Bus attendant Sheela prepares for discharge, says wants to join back school

Chandigarh, August 7

Sheela, the 40-year old bus attendant, who suffered grave head injury in the Carmel Convent tragedy, in which a tree split and fell injuring 18 others, will be discharged on Monday from PGIMER after battling for her life for a month.

Her daughter Jaspreet shared, “We are grateful to the doctors who save my mother’s life and gifted her with another. She can talk slowly and often tells me that she wants to go to her school and meet the staff she knew. Doctors say that it 8-9 months for her to fully recover. She is putting up great strength for us. She even tries to walk but we move her around on wheelchair. I am really happy that she is coming back home.”

The bus attendant had slipped into coma and fought for her life on the ventilator support for 10 days. She came out of the ventilator support on July 19 and was shifted to room air with a stable blood pressure.

Sheela started responding to verbal commands gradually after coming out of coma. “The patient is stable and has recovered well. She will be discharged tomorrow,” said an official from PGIMER.

The school staff had afforded the treatment of the bus attendant at PGIMER, while the UT Administration had also provided a financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh to the family.

The incident had also claimed life of a 16-year-old student from Carmel Convent School. The tree was heavily infested with termite and fell apart on July 8 when children were having their meals during the break.
