The Panchkula police have registered a case of cheating against an advocate on the complaint of a colonel who alleged that he was cheated of Rs 4.82 lakh by the suspect.

Colonel Manish Dhanda, a resident of Sector 5 here, registered a complaint with the Panchkula police claiming that he had filed for representation regarding an annual confidential report (ACR) at Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT), New Delhi, in 2010. The case was shifted to Kolkata after he was transferred to Jharkhand. Col Dhanda said he engaged advocate Mayukh Maitra in March 2012 to represent his case at the AFT in Kolkata and paid him a token amount of Rs 12,500. He said, “The advocate informed me on Nov 5, 2022 that the AFT’s judgement had been delivered in my favour but since then he has been extracting payments on pretexts of legal charges from me. Through the multiple payments he has taken Rs 4.82 lakh.”

The colonel alleged that despite repeated requests since last year Maitra has not shared the AFT’s judgement with him. He added, “The Armed Forces Tribunal, Kolkata, notified that my case had been closed on March 8, 2015, because no counsel had appeared on my behalf. I realised that I was cheated into making payments. The Eastern Command litigation branch also brought to my notice, last year, that no such case had been listed and no judgement had been passed in my favour as claimed by the advocate.”

The Colonel complained that the advocate had cheated him of Rs 4.82 lakh. The police have now registered a case against the suspect under Section 420 (Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Sector-5 police station.
