Chandigarh, July 12
A local court has sentenced a city resident to undergo 10 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) in a case registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the convict, Vishal, alias Shankar, a resident of Sector 52.
As per the prosecution, the police had recovered 21 injections of buprenorphine from the accused during a checking in Sector 53 on August 26, 2018. The police claimed that the accused failed to produce any valid permit or licence for the injections.
The counsel for the accused claimed that he was falsely implicated in the case. He also said there was no compliance of Section 50 of the NDPS Act and no gazetted officer was present at the time of the alleged recovery.
Sunil Dutt, the public prosecutor, said the prosecution proved the case beyond a shadow of doubt.
After hearing of the arguments, the court held the accused guilty under Section 22 of the NDPS Act for possessing banned injections without any permit or licence and pronounced the sentence.
