CBI gets permission to prosecute woman SI of Chandigarh Police in graft case

The CBI has received sanction to prosecute Sarabjit Kaur, woman sub-inspector (SI) of the Chandigarh Police, who was arrested while allegedly taking bribe.

The CBI had registered an FIR against the accused on a complaint of a person who alleged that the former had demanded and accepted the bribe money from him for not putting his name in a case registered at Sector 36 police station, Chandigarh. The CBI arrested the woman sub-inspector on September 17, 2021.

PK Dogra, senior public prosecutor for the CBI, told the CBI court about receiving the prosecution sanction from the competent authority. Dogra requested the court to include the name of Kuldeep Singh Chahal, UT SSP, (competent authority of the Chandigarh Police) as a witness in the case. The court has adjourned the case for December 21.

Dogra also informed the court that the CFSL reports of the chemical used during the trap had also been received.

The CBI had already filed a chargesheet against the accused in the court. Sarabjit Kaur was booked by the CBI under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act. As per the chargesheet, Sarabjit was assigned the task of probing a complaint filed by a woman who had levelled allegations against her husband. An FIR was registered in this connection under the POCSO Act.

It has been alleged that Sarabjit Kaur started calling people to join the investigation. She allegedly demanded bribe from one of them for not including his name in the challan to be filed in the case. She reportedly asked for Rs10,000 from the person, who gave a complaint further to the CBI. The CBI laid a trap and caught the accused red-handed while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs10,000.
