In yet another auction of heritage items from the city, a pair of teak armchairs designed by Pierre Jeanneret was sold for Rs 15.39 lakh in auctions held in Monaco recently.
Ajay Jagga, member, Heritage Protection Cell, Chandigarh, said in an auction held in Monaco on July 20, a pair of teak armchairs fetched Rs 15.39 lakh. In a letter to the Secretary General, Rajya Sabha, New Delhi, he submitted in addition to the earlier submissions that one article, a pair of chairs, was auctioned in Monaco by an auction house, without any resistance from the Government of India.
“In such foreign auctions, in order to claim its heritage the burden lies on the country of origin and in this case it is
India, which needs to take care of this issue for its heritage protection, by providing appropriate law to the foreign countries,” he added.
