Chandigarh: 2 nabbed with illicit liquor

Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Police have arrested two persons for allegedly possessing illicit liquor. A police official said the suspects had been identified as Munna Lal Sharma (58), a resident of New Indira Colony, Mani Majra, and Rakesh Kumar (29), a resident of Saketri, Panchkula. Sources said following a tip-off, the duo was arrested and 100 nips of country made liquor were seized from their possession. The suspects were arrested from near the IT Park area and a case under various provisions of the the Excise Act was registered. Both suspects were later released on bail, the official added. tns

Team for rowing c’ship selected

Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Rowing Association has selected a 27-member contingent to participate in the 41st Senior and 25th Open Sprint National Rowing Championship, to be held at Army Rowing Node, Pune, from January 28 to February 3. The secretary of the Chandigarh Rowing Association, Rajiv Sharma, said Deepak Kumar Singh and Ashish have been appointed coaches for the contingent. TNS

DAV academy log win in cricket

Mohali: DAV Cricket Academy, Panchkula, defeated Nagesh Academy, Zirakpur, by eight runs during the ongoing 2nd RP Singh Memorial Cricket Tournament. Batting first, the Panchkula team posted 172 with the help of Harshul (47), Lovejit Singh (29), Ayushman (21), and Rudra Rawat (18). Meet Angad, Tanmay Latka, and Shivang Shandil claimed three wickets each for the bowling side. In reply, the Zirakpur team posted 164, with Abhimanyu (80) and Tanmay Latka (23) as the top scorers for the side. Rich haul for local boxers

Chandigarh: Local boxers won a rich haul of medals in the ongoing Khelo India Games at Tamil Nadu. Parineeta won the gold medal in the 48 kg event by defeating her opponent from Manipur. Nidhai won the silver medal in the 52 kg category, while Sushant Kapoor claimed the top podium spot in the 50 kg category. Rohit Chamoli claimed the bronze medal in the 52 kg category, while Aditya Raj bagged another bronze in the 71 kg category. Bhavya Saini claimed the third position in the 80 kg group. Dr Bhagwant Singh and Neema accompanied the team as coaches. TNS

Strawberry win big in athletics

Chandigarh: Athletes of Strawberry School, Sector 26, shined at the recently concluded Chandigarh North District Athletics Championship. Aradhya Jindal won a gold medal in the javelin throw and a bronze medal in the 30 m race in the U-8 category. Kaasvi Grover won a silver medal in the U-8 javelin throw event, while Kiara Grover secured a bronze. The school director, Atul Khanna, and principal, Nisha Kaul, congratulated the medal winners.
