Chandigarh Administration announced night curfew in the union territory on Tuesday to help stem the rising COVID-19 cases.

Curfew hours are between 10 pm and 5 am, during which time only essential services will be allowed to function, a press release from the administration said.

No gatherings will be allowed during curfew hours, and all restaurants must shut down by 10 pm, the press release said.

The decision will be reviewed when the situation improves, the press release said.

The curfew will come into effect from Wednesday.

Stricter measures such as weekend curfews and closing of apni mandis as well as other crowded places will have to be considered unless people following COVID guidelines, the press release said.

Chandigarh reported 319 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday and two more deaths, taking the UT’s total tally since the pandemic began last March to 28,798 infections and 386 deaths.

The UT has 3,037 active cases.

Chandigarh has been steadily reporting an alarmingly high number of cases since last month. According to the union health ministry’s statement last week, the UT’s positivity rate stood at 11.2 per cent—among the highest in the country.
