Chandigarh Administration celebrates Republic Day with patriotic fervour
The Union Territory of Chandigarh on Sunday joined the nation in celebrating the 76th Republic Day with full patriotic fervour at Parade Ground in Sector 17 here.
UT Chief Secretary Rajeev Verma, who was the chief guest at the event, unfurled the National Flag and inspected a guard of honour. This was followed by a march past by various contingents of the police and NCC.
The Republic Day Parade also saw a colourful display of tableaux from different departments, including the Education department, Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee, Science and Technology, Department of Industries, Chandigarh Police, Traffic Police and Municipal Corporation, emphasising on social messages and development.
Students from different schools, colleges and GRIID of Chandigarh enthralled the audience with their captivating performances.
Verma addressed the audience and recalled the struggles and sacrifices of freedom fighters. He re-emphasised the significance of 26th January as the nation completed 75 years of the implementation of the Indian Constitution on this day.
The Chief Secretary highlighted the latest initiatives and achievements of the UT Administration.
After the address, commendation certificates were awarded to 21 employees who rendered outstanding services in the field of public service, art and culture, sports and social services. Three police personnel were conferred with President’s Police Medal and 24 police personnel with Administrator’s Police Medal for their distinguished and meritorious services.
Awards were given to the best contingents of the parade. The Chandigarh Police (Female) received the overall Best Contingency Award at the parade. The first prize in the category of Police Contingent went to Chandigarh Police (Female). The second position was bagged by Punjab Police while the CRPF Platoon came third.
In the category of Home Guard/Fire Brigade/Civil Defence, the first prize was bagged by Chandigarh Civil Defence, second position was bagged by Chandigarh Home Guard while Chandigarh Fire Services came third.
In the category of Road Safety/Platoon Scouts/Guides, the first prize was bagged by GMSSS-18, the second position was secured by GMSSS-20 while GMSSS-40 came third.
In the NSS category, Shivalik Public School bagged the first position, I.S. Dev Samaj-21 came second and SHG School-40 came third. In the School Band category, Sacred Heart School-26 bagged the first position, Moti Ram Arya School second and PMShri GMSS-Dhanas third. In the Tableau category, the Chandigarh Education department bagged the first position, Cultural Affairs department second and Municipal Corporation third. In the Cultural programme trophy, patriotic dance by GMSSS-16 bagged the first position and a yoga show by PGGC-11 came second.
The function was attended by Chandigarh Mayor Kuldeep Kumar, Additional Solicitor General of India Satya Pal Jain, DGP Surendra Singh Yadav, senior officials of the Administration and the fervent citizens of the City Beautiful.
Meanwhile, the Chief Secretary declared holiday tomorrow for all private and government schools.
