Chandigarh, January 14

The city today reported 1,834 new cases of Covid-19, the highest single-day spike of the pandemic. The UT positivity rate stands at 25.21 per cent.

In less than a month, the active cases have gone above 7,000 in the city, which had taken 60 days (from March 12 to May 10) last year to touch the peak of active cases at 8,653.

Chandigarh has been reporting an alarming uptick in Covid-19 cases since last week. The number of active cases in the UT stands at 7,257, which is 548 per cent more than the count reported from the city last Friday.

A total of 203 Covid oxygen beds are occupied in the government and private hospitals of the city and 29 patients are on ventilator.

The UT reported two more fatalities today — that of a 44-year-old unvaccinated man, who was diabetic and suffering from kidney problems, and a 50-year-old fully vaccinated woman, who suffered from hypertension. They were found positive for Covid posthumously. The total fatality count of the city stands at 1,086. A total of seven deaths due to the virus have been reported this month, of which three were brought dead cases.
