The Fire and Rescue Services Committee has reviewed the proposal for adopting provisions of the Haryana Fire Safety Act for Chandigarh. A meeting of the committee was held under the chairmanship of MC councillor Maheshinder Singh Sidhu. More than 105 suggestions were received from the public, which were formally placed before the committee for consideration.
During detailed deliberations, the committee expressed concern over the safety and security of the people and showed keen interest in taking robust and prompt decisions on fire safety measures. It was decided to procure and modernise fire safety equipment through the disaster management funds to ensure rapid emergency response. A presentation by department officers on the existing infrastructure, preparedness and additional requirements for effective coverage was also shown.
The committee also charted out a provisional plan of safety measures, which includes upgrading of fire hydrant systems and their regular maintenance, introducing awareness drives in residential, commercial and institutional areas on preventive fire safety practices.
