Under the project, the water pipeline will be laid till the doorsteps of houses and other institutions like schools, colleges. MC sources said with the completion of the project, the residents will be able to get tertiary water connections without any hassle of taking permission to dig roads in the vicinity or purchasing material. The MC will charge the required fee as fixed under bylaws.

To be completed at an estimated cost of Rs 72 crore, the project will help the MC save precious drinking water. Under the water bylaws, the civic body has made tertiary water connections mandatory for houses measuring 500 sq yards and above.

While around 8,000 houses are eligible for tertiary water connections, half of the houses are yet to receive it. Likewise, all schools, colleges and other institutions have also not been connected with the tertiary treated water line.

The tertiary treated water is supplied from six sewage treatment plants of the MC situated at 3BRD, Dhanas, Raipur Khurd, Raipur Kalan, Maloya and Diggian. These STPs have been upgraded under the Smart City Mission.

Providing uninterrupted water supply to the residents is a big challenge for the MC. The city witnesses a shortfall of 13 MGD of water against the demand of 100 MGD during the summer. Presently, the city is receiving 87 MGD of water. In such a situation, increasing tertiary treated water connections will help the MC save drinking water.
