The number of Covid-19 deaths has fallen by 68 per cent in the city in the past 20 days as compared to the last 20 days of May.

The month of May remained the worst month on the Covid front with the city seeing over 17,000 cases and 275 deaths. During the month, the health infrastructure was overwhelmed as ICU beds with ventilators remained occupied, leaving patients struggling for critical care beds. On May 6, there was no ventilator bed vacant at the government hospitals in the city.

Now, there are 37 ventilator beds vacant at the PGI and 20 at the GMCH-32. There were 956 total Covid beds available in the city today.

In the last one week, 2.4 per cent of samples tested came back positive. The overall recovery rate of the city is 98.2 per cent. The cases of Covid-19 admitted to the PGI have also fallen.

Dr Vipin Kaushal from the PGI said they had 98 Covid patients and nine of them belong to the city. While 59 are from Punjab, 23 hail from Haryana, four from Himachal Pradesh and three from other states.

Dr Jagat Ram, Director, PGI, said, “The fatalities have now reduced as low number of cases is being recorded. A lot of Covid patients are able to avail themselves of health facilities such as beds, which was missing during the last month due to the overwhelming second wave. Many patients also did not report to hospitals. But the Delta variant is very much there in the community and it’s even more dangerous. We must remain cautious so as to prevent the third wave and Covid deaths.”
