Chandigarh has emerged as the top spender in household consumption across India, as revealed by the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES) 2022-23 conducted by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.
Urban households in Chandigarh exhibit spending patterns nearly double the national average, with a monthly per capita consumption expenditure of Rs 12,575, surpassing even Delhi.
In comparison to the national average of Rs 6,459 for urban households, Chandigarh’s urban counterparts stand out for their higher spending. Notably, rural households in Chandigarh also display a significant monthly per capita consumption expenditure of Rs 7,467.
Among Union Territories, Chandigarh stands as one of the highest spenders, overshadowing urban households in Ladakh, Lakshadweep and Puducherry.
The survey sheds light on consumption patterns, revealing that urban India allocates 60.30% of expenses to non-food categories, covering conveyance, healthcare, clothing/bedding, footwear and fuel/electricity. Food-related expenses account for 39.70%, with 10% spent on beverages and processed food, 7.15% on milk and milk products and 3.76% on vegetables.
The National Sample Survey Office, conducting these surveys annually, categorises the consumption basket into food, consumables & services, and durable goods. The data, released by the ministry provides valuable insights into the economic landscape and spending habits across different regions of the country.
