Following the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the UT Administration has framed the rules for the functioning of the Waqf Board in Chandigarh. Earlier, the UT Waqf Board had to follow the guidelines of the Punjab Waqf Board.

According to a notification issued by the UT Home Department, the rules may be called the Chandigarh Waqf Rules-2024. There are 34 properties of the Waqf Board in the city. As per the rules, the board shall have power to transfer its property, subject to the conditions and restrictions that the transfer proceeds of such transfer shall be utilised for the acquisition of property by the board, and the property so acquired shall be utilised for the purpose recognised by the Muslim Law as pious, religious or charitable.

The election of the members of the board shall be held under the superintendence, direction and control of the UT Home Secretary.

After the appointment of the members, the UT Administration shall give one-week notice for the first meeting of the board for the election of the chairperson. The meeting shall be presided over by the UT Home Secretary or his representative. The name of the candidate to the post shall be proposed by a member, which shall be seconded by another member. The voting shall be held by secret ballot.
