The Department of Animal Husbandry has geared up to prevent any type of ingression of avian influenza (bird flu) in the UT.
Dr Kanwajit Bhangoo, Joint Director, Animal Husbandry, UT, said four rapid response teams had been made to handle any eventuality. The department had started physical and sera surveillance of all kind of birds, including commercial, poultry, backyard poultry and migratory birds.
The migratory birds have started arriving in the city and usually stay here till February. Migratory birds play a huge role in transmission of avian influenza. The department has activated its surveillance at Sukhna Lake where these birds arrive during winters. — TNS
