Chandigarh girls move into semis of badminton championship
Rajasthan toppled Himachal Pradesh 3-0 in the opening quarterfinal match of the Yonex Sunrise North Zone Interstate Senior & Junior (U-19) Badminton Championships-2024, which commenced at the Sector 38 sports complex.
In the opening game Shivansh went down fighting against Pranay Katta 19-21, 21-11, 13-21, while Harsh Chaplot ousted Karan Chaudhary 9-21, 13-21. In the last game, the pair of Parthiv and Samaksh Dhalta went down against Denish Shrivastava and Shubham Patel 11-21, 16-21.
TL Satya Prakash, Commissioner and Secretary, Government of Haryana, was the chief guest and started the tournament by playing an exhibition match with the Chandigarh Badminton Association office-bearers. A march-past of the participating teams was also organised by the teams. The teams of Delhi and Chandigarh were adjudged as the best turnout and second-best turnout teams, respectively, and were awarded trophies.
In the matches, Punjab logged a 3-0 win over Jammu & Kashmir. Lakshay Sharma easily toppled Bhavya Sharma 21-10, 21-15, while Shikhar Rallan defeated Raghav Dogra 21-14, 21-11 to give Punjab a 2-0 lead. In the last match, the team of Adhayan Kakkar and Mridul Jha defeated Harsh Mahajan and Paranjay 21-16, 19-21, 21-13. Haryana defeated hosts Chandigarh as Manraj Singh recorded a 21-7, 11-21 win over Mohit Singh and Samarveer went down against Gautam Arora 14-21, 16-21. In the doubles match, Kevin CC Wong and Mohit faced a 21-23, 21-23 defeat against Anshul Budhwar and Sunny Nehra.
In the women’s team event, Haryana defeated Himachal Pradesh 3-0. Devika Sihag won an easy match against Bharati Sharma 21-15, 21-6, while Unnati Hooda blanked Pakhi 21-12, 21-10. Apoorva and Sakshi Gahlawat defeated Jyotishka and Tejaswani 21-7, 21-14. The hosts defeated Jammu & Kashmir 3-0. After a see-saw battle, Unnati Jaral went down fighting against local challenger Rijul Saini 21-16, 17-21, 16-21, while Mehnoor defeated Skiedeep Kaur 21-17, 21-16 and Krishika Mahajan and Skiedeep Kaur went down against Jasmeet Kaur / Naina Trehan 21-12, 17-21, 20-22.
