The Chandigarh Golf Club — one of the prestigious clubs of the city — will choose its new president and office-bearers on January 25. The notification for the election has been issued.

The CGC has 1,800 registered members, including famous golfers, businessmen, politicians and bureaucrats. The annual general election is held to choose the president and 11 members of the executive committee of the club.

As per the notification, the filing of nominations will start from January 3 (10 am) till January 9 (till 5 pm). The scrutiny of the nominations will be held on January 10 (5 pm), followed by allowing withdrawal by January 11 (5 pm). On January 25, the voting will start at 11 am and members will be allowed to cast their vote till 4.30 pm. The counting will start on January 26 at 9 am, followed by announcement of the results. The counting is likely to continue on the next day for choosing the 11-member executive committee.

In the last elections, three-time president Ravibir Singh Grewal had defeated four-time former chief of the club, Birinder Singh Gill by a margin of 401 votes. The election had witnessed a record turnout. Of a total 1,800 registered voters, 1,183 members cast their vote—which was the highest polling in the past five years. Grewal polled 790 votes and Gill managed to bag 389. Four votes were declared invalid. In the 2023 elections, Lt Col HS Chahal (retd), popular as Bobby Chahal, was re-elected as the CGC president for a second term. He defeated Major Rajinder Singh Virk (retd) by 29 votes. Chahal had secured 591 votes, while Virk got 562 votes. Three votes were declared invalid.

In the previous election, three candidates ran for the top post. Chahal had won by a margin of 99 votes by defeating Major Rajinder Singh Virk (retd) and SPS Ghai. It was the first club elections post Covid pandemic, which also witnessed a good turnout out. A total of 31 members had filed their papers for the 11 posts of executive committee member.

On an average, the CGC election had witnessed voting by 900 to 1,100 members.
