Chandigarh lad Krish to play at amateur golfers’ tournament in England

After representing the nation in the Asia Pacific Golf Confederation Junior Championship and Singapore Junior Golf Championship, Krish Chawla from the city will now be playing in the R&A Amateur Championship at Royal St George’s Club in England from June 16 to 21.

One of the most prestigious amateur tournaments globally, the event will feature 288 top amateurs and the winner would gain coveted exemptions into The Open Championship, The Masters and the US Open.

In both the international events, the young golfer finished among top-25 golfers. In the Asia Pacific Golf Confederation Championship at Hong Kong, Chawla secured the 22nd spot, while in the Singapore Junior Golf Championship, he recorded a credible 12th position with a total gross score of 223 (76-76-71) in the boys’ overall category. In Hong Kong, Chawla recorded a total gross of 219 (72-73-74) during the three-day event. In team competition, the local boy along with Ranveer Mitroo posted 430 (141-142-147) to finish fifth and move into the next leg.

“I am happy with my performance, and currently getting adapted to the weather in England. Conditions are surely different here in comparison to the previous two venues. It will be exciting to face the challenge,” said the 16-year-old student of Strawberry Fields High School, Sector 26.

Recently, he scripted history by rising to the No. 1 position in the India’s junior golf rankings, following a top-three finish performance at the Indian Golf Union (IGU) Andhra Pradesh State Junior Boys Golf Tournament, played at East Point Golf Club in Visakhapatnam from May 19 to 23.

Having 960th rank in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, Chawla recently had his best rank (738th) with two wins and 14 top-10 finishes. This year, he finished sixth in the IGU Rajasthan State Junior Golf Championship, 95th in the IGU Northern India Amateur Championship (all ages), fifth in the Samarvir Sahi Amateur Golf Championship in Chandigarh (all ages) and third in the IGU Andhra Pradesh Junior Golf Championship before flying to Hong Kong and Singapore. “He has been playing quite well and performed good in the recent international events. He is carrying a big aim of representing the nation at the top-most level,” said Atul Khanna, Director, Strawberry Fields High School.

“The year has been a great learning phase, so far. However , I believe the best is yet to come,” added Chawla.
