Chandigarh, August 27
Ahead of the Panjab University Campus Students Council (PUCSC) elections, the UT police have identified 104 potential troublemakers and asked them to furnish surety bonds. Seventynine of them are linked to the university, while the rest are associated with DAV College, Sector 10, and Post Graduate Government College, Sector 11.
This annual exercise by the police is aimed at ensuring a peaceful conduct of the student elections.
A police official said the list comprised leaders and members from almost all student parties active on the PU campus as well as the two colleges. The list has been submitted to the Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Central, as a preventive measure to avoid violence during the elections.
Those named in the list will be required to appear before the SDM and provide a bond assuring that they will not engage in any violent activities during the elections.
Meanwhile, security on the university campus has been beefed up with nearly 100 police personnel stationed at key locations, including the Student Centre and Law Department, where party leaders often meet. Fourteen checkpoints have been set up to monitor suspicious activities on the campus.
The police have also compiled a list of vehicles used by various student organisations during the elections. These vehicles will be thoroughly checked while entering the PU campus. The police have also collected information about the local addresses of party leaders.
To prevent the presence of outsiders on the campus, raids will be conducted in hostels, said an official.
An all-party meeting will be held before the elections to caution student leaders against causing any disruptions in the peaceful conduct of elections.
