Chandigarh, July 24
The UT police have suspended three traffic cops, including a Sub Inspector (SI), following a complaint of corruption against them.
Sources said a complaint was received that a cop had allegedly taken Rs1,000 bribe from a woman doctor. It was alleged that the woman was on her way to Panchkula when a cop stopped her at the traffic light point near Mauli Jagran and claimed that she was not wearing a seat belt.
In the complaint filed by the woman’s father, it was alleged that she was allowed to leave only after she gave Rs1,000 to the cop. Acting on the complaint, DIG (Traffic) Shashank Anand marked an inquiry during which it was found that a recovery van was stationed at the spot on the day of the incident and three cops – an SI and two constables — were present there on duty.
Sources said though the woman did not identify the cop, who had allegedly taken bribe, the Police Department suspended all three cops on the basis of a preliminary inquiry. The cops have denied the allegations. — TNS
