The Police Department is developing a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme to strengthen security in the city. Under this initiative, watchmen and security guards in both commercial as well as residential areas will act as extended eyes and ears of the police.

Sources said the police beat officers would coordinate with watchmen in each sector to build a strong security network. They will get training and essential equipment such as jackets and torches to improve their effectiveness in assisting the police in curbing crime.

The beat officers have been directed to prepare a list of night watchmen in their areas and share contact information with them to facilitate the reporting of suspicious activities.

Each sector has a police beat box, officers of which serve as a liaison link between residents and the police. These officers are familiar with local RWAs (resident welfare associations), eminent residents and vehicles in their areas. The police also plan to hold regular training sessions for the watchmen and security guards on how to identify threats and establish an effective communication. This training will equip them to handle different situations with confidence and efficiency.

Currently in the planning stage, the proposal is expected to be launched soon.

The department is optimistic that this initiative will not only enhance security but also strengthen the bond between the community and police.

To ensure the sustainability of the programme, the police are also exploring roping in RWAs. These partnerships could provide additional resources and support for the scheme, making it a long-term solution to maintaining safety of residents.

Sources said as part of the implementation process, a pilot phase will be launched in select areas of Chandigarh. Feedback from this phase will be used to further refine the programme before it is rolled out across the city.
