Prince Sharma of Himachal Pradesh overpowered Manpreet Singh 21-10, 22-20 in the men’s 35+ years qualifying round on the opening day of the All India Master’s Badminton Championship at the Sector 38 Sports Complex today. Nitin Mehra logged a comeback 17-21, 21-17, 21-15 win over Mohamed Munir, while Pankaj Malik overpowered fourth seed Yogesh Chauhan 21-18, 21-18.

Keshav Sharma defeated Prashant Kumar of Uttar Pradesh 21-8, 21-14, while Punjab’s Lakwinder Singh defeated Anish Sharma 21-12, 21-11. Punjab’s Anuj Dhand defeated Prakash Chand 21-12, 21-15 and Amit Sondhi defeated Himanshu Kashyap of Himachal Pradesh 21-7, 21-12.

In the 40+ category, Ashish Mishra of Uttarakhand defeated Manoj Kochar 21-16, 21-14. Delhi’s Rudra Kaushik also marched ahead by defeating Abhishek Chauhan 21-18, 21-12, Harsh Rawat defeated Deep Chandra Pandey 21-18, 21-13 and Yogesh Chauhan ousted Mehul Patel 21-11, 21-7. In the men’s 45+ category, Rakesh Kumar defeated S Chotani 21-8, 21-15. In the men’s doubles 40+ event, the pair of Rakesh Giri and Sumit Bouchiwal defeated Rawat and Shiv Dhiman 12-21, 21-17, 21-19. Ashish Khedikar and Jayendra Dhole of Maharashtra overpowered Manoj Kochhar and Sourav Bharti 21-16, 21-16, while Parag Chopda and Santosh Kadam thrashed Bhupinder Singh and Varinder Singh 21-15, 21-18. Amit and Naveen defeated Dr Kapil Arora and Prof Mehul Patel 22-20, 21-11. The pair of Dr Pankaj Gupta and Naveen Miglani defeated Deshpal and Mukesh Madan 22-20, 21-14 in a match of men’s doubles 45+ event. Gautam Singh and Ishwar Dass Kattaria outplayed Deepak Jain and Rupen 21-4, 21-10. In the women’s doubles 35+ event, Deepti Joshi and Nalini Malik defeated Salochna and Vibha Bansal 17-21, 21-16, 21-11, while Himani Punia Sharma and Rajul Bhandari defeated Binny Bansal and Priyanka Parmar 21-15, 21-11.

The tournament is being organised by the Chandigarh Shuttlers Badminton Club under the aegis of the Chandigarh Badminton Association (CBA). Earlier, Surinder Mahajan, general secretary, CBA, was honoured by the organising committee, while Col Raj Parmar, senior vice-president, was elected as joint secretary of the Badminton Association of India in the presence of Tejdeep Singh Saini, Director Sports, Chandigarh.
