Clean Air Survey 2024 report released by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change today has revealed a decline in the air quality ranking of the city.

The city ranking has dropped nine positions compared to last year, now standing at 31st among cities with a population of over 10 lakh. In 2023, it held the 22nd position in the same category.

A total of 178 scores were submitted from Chandigarh under the “Regulation of Air Pollution in Non-Attainment Cities” initiative. However, the city’s final score this year was 156, a drop of 22 points from the previous year, leading to a decline in the ranking by nine points.

Surat in Gujarat has secured the top spot in the survey, followed by Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh at second and Agra at third. These top three cities will be awarded the prestigious National Clean Air City Award. Surat will receive a cash prize of Rs 1.5 crore, Jabalpur Rs 1 crore, and Agra Rs 50 lakh for their achievements.

The Clean Air Survey 2024 conducted by the Centre evaluates cities based on eight key parameters, including biomass and municipal solid waste burning, road dust, emissions from construction and demolition activities, vehicle exhaust, industrial emissions, other pollution sources, public awareness initiatives and progress in reducing particulate matter (PM10) levels.
