Chandigarh: Cash and jewellery were allegedly stolen from a house in Sector 7. Complainant Harnak Singh claimed an unidentified person stole Rs 2 lakh in cash, two pairs of tops, a gold chain, a diamond ear set and a bracelet set from the house. Woman’s purse snatched
Chandigarh: A motorcycle-borne miscreant allegedly snatched the purse from a woman in Sector 41. The complainant, a resident of Sector 41, claimed an unidentified person snatched her purse containing Rs 700 in cash and a mobile phone. The police have registered a case. TNS
Youth held for house theft
Chandigarh: A 20-year-old youth, Ram Kesh, has been arrested for house theft. Deepa, a resident of Sector 25, claimed she had gone to her parent’s house on June 18. On returning home on June 28, she found an LCD and purse stolen. A case was registered at the Sector 11 police station. TNS
Free Urdu classes at city college
Chandigarh: The Chandigarh office of the Language Department of Punjab will organise free Urdu classes from July 1. The six-month course will be conducted in collaboration with GGDSD College, Sector 32. The classes will be held from 5.15 pm to 6.15 pm at the college. Students from Chandigarh and Panchkula can take admission in the course. They can contact Assistant Director, Hindi-Punjabi cell, Civil Secretariat-2, Sector 9, Chandigarh, on any working day from 9 am to 5 pm. They can also approach the Urdu professor at the college in the evening. TNS
Int’l fellowship for PU faculty
Chandigarh: Dr Tanzeer Kaur, faculty at the Department of Biophysics, Panjab University, has been awarded the SERB international research experience for the year 2022- 23, supported by the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), a statutory body of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. The fellowship will allow Tanzeer to pursue a collaborative research project to study the molecular mechanisms of Parkinson’s disease with Prof Allen Kaasik at the Institute of Biomedicine and Translational Medicine, University of Tartu, (Estonia). Her research focus is to develop drugs and find novel drug targets for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. The award will boost collaboration of the PU with the Estonian university, where she will be spending next six months to accomplish the objectives of this research project. TNS
‘Sensitise people to waste segregation’
Chandigarh: Municipal Commissioner Anindita Mitra on Wednesday directed all sub-inspectors and chief sanitary inspectors to sensitise citizens to the segregation of waste at the source level in four types, i.e. dry, wet, hazardous and sanitary, so that the collection and processing of garbage became easier. The MC official said their waste-collection vehicles had separate compartments for different kinds of garbage. “We have asked the door-to-door waste collectors to make people aware and also ensure segregation at their own level,” said an official.
