Chandigarh sub-inspector to be feted with Jeevan Raksha Padak
Chandigarh, January 25
Sub-Inspector Sudesh Kumar will be honoured with Jeevan Raksha Padak, which carries a reward of Rs 1 lakh, on the Republic Day.
During incessant rains in Chandigarh that led to flooding in different parts on July 10 last year, Kumar displayed bravery by rescuing four persons trapped in a tubewell in Daria’s forest area.
The following day, he saved a 40-year old man who had jumped into the Sukhna Choe, near the Makhanmajra-Baltana area.
Kumar, incharge of Daria police post, while patrolling near the Sukhna Choe, responded promptly after a passerby informed him about a man drowning. Kumar jumped into the choe and rescued the man, who was rushed to the GMSH, Sector 16, from where he was later discharged.
In 2020, Kumar had received the President’s Police Medal for Meritorious Service. In 2015, he was awarded the Courageous Service Award by the UN Police Commissioner, United Nations Mission, Liberia. While at the UN mission in Liberia, he was travelling in a helicopter, which was crash-landed. Kumar despite being traumatised himself extracted the injured flight engineer, a crew member.
President’s Police Medal for two cops
Two UT police officials — ASI Rajesh Kumar Taya and ASI Jogender Singh — will receive the President’s Police Medal for Meritorious Services on the Republic Day.
