Chandigarh’s Ayaan bags laurels at International chess meet

Chandigarh, July 15

Ayaan Garg (12) from the city won gold medal in the U-12 open category (standard/ classic) at the 7th Western Asian Youth Chess Championship-2024 in Sri Lanka. Garg also won the individual silver medal for the nation in the U-12 open category (rapid) in the same championship.

Garg, a student Strawberry Fields High School, Sector 26, was placed at 1,885th position in the FIDE international rating. He got a major jump of 73 points after the event.

He had started the tournament as the third seed and played nine games to remain unbeaten throughout the tournament. He won seven games and played two draws to win gold.

In the rapid format, there were seven games and he won five of them, drew one and lost one to bag silver. He joined the Chandigarh Chess Academy in 2019 and trained under Naveen Bansal.

Atul Khanna, Director, Strawberry Fields High School, congratulated Garg on winning medals in the international meet.
