Charges framed against golfer in ‘dowry’ case

A local court has framed charges against golfer Sujjan Singh in an alleged dowry case filed against him by his wife international golfer Irina Brar.
The charges have been framed for the offences punishable under Sections 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 498-A (husband or the relative of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) of the Indian Penal Code. The court has fixed May 15 as the next date of hearing for prosecution evidence.
In her complaint to the police filed in 2018, Irina Brar had alleged that after two years of her marriage, Sujjan started torturing her. Both golfers got married in November 2010. Later, she and her daughter were allegedly thrown out of the house by her husband in May 2018. She alleged that she was not allowed to enter the house and collect her belongings.
Brar, a former international golfer, had studied sports psychology in the USA and founded sports psyche in Chandigarh to counsel athletes. In her complaint to the police, she alleged that her parents had given ample dowry during their wedding, but her husband kept on torturing her.
After investigation, the police registered a case against Sujjan Singh in January 2020. A legal opinion was also obtained before lodging the FIR. The police filed a chargesheet against Sujjan Singh in February last year.
In December, 2018, Irina Brar also filed a case of domestic violence and maintenance in the District Courts, Chandigarh. Brar dominated women’s golf in India from 1999-02 and 2004-06. She was India’s top professional golfer in 2007 and represented India in the Women’s World Cup of Golf in 2008.
